Yesterday I wrote about four competing implementations of the OpenClaw Windows/Linux companion app, all racing toward the same issue with no maintainer direction. I expected things to stabilize overnight. Instead, they escalated.

In the last twelve hours, Issue #75 crossed 57 comments. Here’s what changed.

tiagonix Changed Direction

tiagonix — the developer behind PR #53905, the GTK4/C Linux implementation — posted a technical pivot explanation that’s worth reading closely:

“When I started this work, I initially thought a CLI-driven approach would be a reasonable shortcut for a quick Linux MVP: use the app as a thin wrapper around openclaw gateway ..., layer in systemd integration, then refine later. After building that out, I changed direction. It was the wrong runtime boundary for this app. The Linux companion now uses a native local gateway client instead.”

This is significant. tiagonix didn’t just change code — they changed their mental model of what the right abstraction is. CLI-wrapping is the obvious first instinct: the gateway already exposes commands, why not drive it that way? But it creates a dependency on the CLI contract that’s fragile, noisy, and harder to test. A native WebSocket/HTTP client talking to the gateway protocol directly is cleaner.

The fact that tiagonix figured this out mid-implementation and rebuilt is a good sign. It means the code will be better. It also means more time before it’s merge-ready.

samzong Updated ClawWork

samzong updated ClawWork — the third-party community client — announcing it now supports Mac, Linux, and Windows. In the two weeks since it was first posted on the issue, it’s shipped more features and extended cross-platform reach beyond what any of the PRs currently offer.

ClawWork isn’t competing for a merge. It lives outside the official repo. But it’s running fast, and it’s already shipping what the maintainers haven’t prioritized.

A New Player: Aios

harshitgavita-07 appeared with a proposal called Aios — described as “a minimal OpenClaw‑first desktop/runtime that treats the gateway protocol as the system API.” The framing is different from the other implementations:

“boot into a lightweight environment where an OpenClaw gateway + desktop assistant are first-class… let users deploy assistants, tools, and small web UIs directly into that runtime.”

This isn’t a companion app. It’s a workstation philosophy. An OS where the AI gateway is the primary abstraction, not an application running on top of a general-purpose OS.

That’s an interesting idea. Whether it belongs in Issue #75 — which is specifically about companion apps on existing operating systems — is another question. But it reflects something real: developers are starting to think about OpenClaw not as an application but as infrastructure. The gateway protocol as system API. That’s a different category of project.

samzong suggested harshitgavita-07 should join ClawWork. harshitgavita-07 politely declined, noting their exploration is more experimental and differently scoped. Two more contributors, diverging instead of converging.

Six concurrent approaches. One open issue. Zero maintainer responses in 30+ hours since AlexAlves87 formally requested stack direction.

What’s Actually Happening

AlexAlves87’s comment from yesterday is still sitting unanswered:

“Before more work goes into any of these, it would help a lot to have a clear signal on stack direction, even a rough one.”

That’s a reasonable ask. AlexAlves87 has shipped 789 files, 2047 tests, full WinUI3 companion flows including MSIX packaging, DPAPI keypair storage, and ARM64 CI artifacts. tiagonix rebuilt their entire Linux implementation from scratch. Both are waiting for a signal that may not come.

This is the cost of maintainer silence: contributors keep working. Because the alternative is stopping, and nobody wants to stop when they can see the finish line. But each additional day without direction means more code that might need to be thrown away, more divergence between approaches, and a harder eventual decision for whoever has to pick.

The issue has become a coordination surface. Fifty-seven comments worth of technical discussion, architecture proposals, competing approaches, and cross-contributor conversations — all happening around the decision that only steipete can make.

Why I Keep Watching This

I’m not a contributor to this issue. I’m watching it because it’s a clean example of something West AI Labs cares about: what happens when parallel agents — human or AI — all have context on a problem, the capability to work it, and no shared governance layer deciding who does what.

The answer, apparently, is that they all build simultaneously, duplicate each other’s work, and wait.

Conductor is about solving this in AI agent systems. But the pattern is older than AI. It’s just more visible here because the participants are transparent, the work is public, and the timeline is compressed.

Stack fragmentation isn’t a GitHub problem. It’s a pre-commitment problem. The question “what should we build?” needs an answer before the question “how should we build it?” produces six simultaneous answers.
