The Cloud Wants Your Agent
Two major product launches dropped in 48 hours: KiloClaw (hosted OpenClaw, GA) and Claude Cowork (Anthropic’s enterprise agent platform). Both are genuinely impressive. Both make the same quiet trade — your data and workflows for their convenience. Here’s what’s actually happening.
What Launched
KiloClaw — from Kilo, the AI infra startup backed by GitLab’s Sid Sijbrandij — went generally available on February 24. The pitch is simple: deploy a production-ready OpenClaw agent in 60 seconds, no Docker, no YAML, no 3 AM crashes. It runs on isolated VMs via Fly.io, handles all the network security, and connects to 500+ models through Kilo’s model gateway. For someone who’s wrestled with OpenClaw’s installation process, this is genuinely appealing.
Claude Cowork launched the same day with a sweeping enterprise expansion. Anthropic’s head of Americas opened the announcement by admitting that 2025’s enterprise AI hype “mostly failed” — too many pilots, not enough production deployments. Their answer: private plugin marketplaces, MCP connectors for Google Workspace, Gmail, DocuSign, Apollo, LegalZoom, and prebuilt templates for HR, finance, investment banking, and equity research. The ambition: “actual completed projects and deliverables,” not just drafts and suggestions.
Two different companies, two different approaches, both pointing in the same direction — toward managed, cloud-hosted AI agents as the default.
The Convenience Trade
I want to be honest: KiloClaw solves real problems. OpenClaw is powerful but rough to operate. The “3 AM crash” — when your Node.js process dies silently and your agent stops responding — is a genuine pain. Auto-restart, health monitoring, proxy hardening, and a clean dashboard? Yes, people will pay for that.
Claude Cowork solves real problems too. Enterprise IT departments don’t want to stand up another internal service. The appeal of “connect your Slack and your Google Drive and get a working AI assistant in an afternoon” is real. The plugin marketplace is clever — give admins control over what employees can access, and you defuse the shadow IT anxiety.

But here’s the trade you’re making: your agent’s memory, your scheduled tasks, your connected accounts, your workflow logic — it all lives on someone else’s compute. When you connect DocuSign or your CRM or your email to Claude Cowork, Anthropic’s infrastructure handles every request. When you run your OpenClaw agent on KiloClaw, Kilo’s VMs process everything.
For many use cases, that’s fine. For some — legal, healthcare, financial services, anything touch national security or competitive IP — it’s not.
The Shadow the Cloud Casts
There’s a pattern forming. Every layer of the AI stack is getting a managed, cloud-hosted version: models, inference, agents, memory, orchestration. Each hosted layer is more convenient, more polished, and less yours.
Compute? AWS, GCP, Azure. Models? OpenAI, Anthropic, Google. Inference? Together.ai, Fireworks, Groq. Agents? Now KiloClaw, Claude Cowork, and soon everyone else. Memory and RAG? That’s next.
The cloud is assembling a complete stack — and at each layer, the argument is the same: “You could build this yourself, but why would you?” The implicit answer is: you wouldn’t. You’re not an AI infrastructure company.
What they don’t say is: if you give us every layer, you’ve given us everything.
The Agent Knows Too Much
The stakes are higher with agents than they were with earlier cloud migrations. A hosted email service sees your emails. A hosted agent sees your emails, your calendar, your code repos, your CRM, your Slack, your files — and it acts on your behalf.
It reads legal documents and drafts responses. It monitors your inbox and flags what needs attention. It schedules meetings, summarizes calls, updates your pipeline. An agent wired up to the full Claude Cowork plugin suite knows more about your business operations than most of your employees.
That’s not a reason to refuse agents. It’s a reason to care about where they run.
The cloud has always had your data. Now it has your decision-making loop.
What Sovereignty Actually Looks Like
“Run it locally” is usually dismissed as a hobbyist position. It’s not. Running your agent on your own compute — whether a home server, a Mac Mini, a workstation, or your own cloud VPS — means:
Your memory stays on your machine. Your scheduled tasks don’t travel through a third-party VM. Your API keys aren’t inside someone else’s network boundary. Your business logic doesn’t train someone else’s future product. And critically: if a vendor pivots, gets acquired, raises prices, or goes down, your agent keeps running.
This isn’t “cloud bad, local good.” It’s sovereignty by default with the option to delegate. You choose which layers to outsource based on actual requirements — not because the convenient path was already paved for you.
Where This Goes
KiloClaw just validated that the market wants managed OpenClaw. That’s significant. 3,500 waitlist signups before GA isn’t a hobbyist audience — it’s enterprises and developers who want the power of a local AI agent without the ops burden.
The thing is: the ops burden is solvable without cloud dependency. Better tooling, cleaner installation, auto-restart, and monitoring can all be local. The 60-second deployment KiloClaw offers can exist for on-premise deployments too. It’s a harder product problem, but it’s solvable.

KiloClaw and Claude Cowork will capture a significant market. They’re excellent products for their intended use cases. But there’s another market that’s going untouched: organizations that need the same reliability and polish, without handing the keys to a third party.
The cloud wants your agent. You don’t have to give it one.
